Walk – The Cheviot Hill

14th May 2016

On Saturday the 14th of May we are meeting up to climb The Cheviot Hill and it would be great if you could join us. The Cheviots are a beautifully rugged part of the Borders and this particular route offers excellent views across the whole range on a clear day making for an outstanding hike. The route to the top and back is roughly 17km with a 600m ascent and should take us 6-7 hours. We will be meeting at 9am in the village of Morebattle (between Kelso and Jedburgh) before travelling by car approximately 20mins to Cocklawfoot farm to start the hike at 9.30am. Below is the route we will be taking along with the attached map.

Start at Cocklawfoot farm (852 186), on The Cheviot Ordnance Survey map OL16.
Walk SSW up the farm track all the way uphill to the Pennine Way at 542m on the ridge.Turn NE along Pennine Way (PW) over King’s Seat at 531m (879173). Going east from there following the PW over Cairn Hill 777m from which go NE to Cheviot 815m. Retrace steps to (896193) and go NW over Auchope Cairn along the PW passing the Mountain Refuge Hut to (873201).
Now, at the corner of fence take the fence going due south for about 60m then follow the fence SW along Auchope Rig and at the first fence on the left take it SSE to the bottom of the valley of the Cheviot Burn. Follow the burn SSW to pick up the farm track that takes us back to Cocklawfoot.

We very much look forward to seeing a few of you there for a good old catch up in the hills. Any questions then please ask. Non members are very welcome too so please bring some friends along!
